Accessible Products for Students & Instructors with Disabilities

On behalf of a student or an instructor with a disability that prevents him or her from using standard instructional materials, the school Disability Support Services official may request an electronic file of the materials from Cengage Learning. Below are 2 options for how the school Disability Support Services official may request materials.

  • Cengage Learning is a member of the Access Text Network. AccessText is an independent, free service originally founded and now partially supported by the Association of American Publishers' Higher Education textbook publishers. The ATN serves as a clearing house for publishers needing to provide e-files to post-secondary Disability Support Offices within the United States and our territories. To submit a request via AccessText, you must first become a registered member. The ATN currently has 2 types of membership: Basic which is free and Premium which has a nominal fee associated with it. The Basic membership allows you to request, search, and track your requests. The Premium membership includes a subscription to their Textbook Exchange Library allowing you to exchange files and other alternative formats. To become a member of ATN and to start requesting files, please go to www.accesstext.org. Once your school has been verified as a Disability Support Office with the ATN, you will be able to submit requests for text in alternative formats.
  • For Instructors or Disability offices where the ATN cannot service your school's needs, please use our online permission request form to request e-files directly from Cengage Learning.

Files requested via the ATN or Cengage should follow within 4 to 15 business days of the submission of your request. If files are not available or will be delayed, a staff member will contact you. If an e-file does not exist for the title you are seeking, we will provide you with information on how to obtain a desk copy and permission to create an alternative version of the book for use by your student. If you have questions about the status of your requests via ATN, a Support Log can be created, or via Cengage Learning, you can contact us at permissionrequest@cengage.com or +1 800.730.2214.

Audio Books, Braille, & Large Print

Cengage Learning generally does not have any audio, Braille, or large print versions of our texts. If you are in need of one of these formats, please submit a request and we will grant permission to convert our e-files into a format that is accessible to your student, if you are seeking an audio version of the book, we recommend first checking with Learning Ally (formerly the Recording House for the Blind and Dyslexic). For Braille versions please check with the American Printing House for the Blind.

Closed Captioning

Audio-visual products © 2010 and later are closed captioned with accompanying transcripts. If the product you are using is not closed captioned, please submit a request form for either permission to caption the material or for copies of any available transcripts.

K-12 Market

Since 2007, Cengage Learning has been providing files to the NIMAC in the NIMAS XML format for core print titles published after July 2006. If you are a K-12 institution in need of e-files for print-impaired students, please visit the NIMAC website to locate your state coordinator and to check to see if the title is already available in the NIMAC. If your title is not currently listed, please have your state coordinator request to have the title added. Please note that the conversion process takes at least 2 months and it may be more appropriate to complete our online form to request pdf files. For more information on the NIMAC please click here. XML files are only available through your state coordinator. Cengage does not provide the NIMAS XML files directly to customers.
